MACS lift (Minimal Access Cranial Suspension) is a new technique in Face Lift Surgery, that is now a rage in Europe. I am the only Plastic Surgeon in India to have trained under Dr Patrick Tonnard (Ghent, Belgium), in MACS Lift Surgery. I worked with him for a month, and was assistant to him in a number of such cases, and he is a wonderful teacher, teaching me all the basics of a MACS lift. I now perform this procedure in Delhi/ India, at a fraction of the cost of that in Europe.

Dr Patrick Tonnard and Dr Alexis Verpaele, in Ghent,Belgium, devised the technique of MACS Lift together. This is now almost the most commonly performed procedure for face lift now in Europe, and. The procedure is done as an out patient procedure, under local anesthesia and sedation. The patient can go home after 6 hours of the procedure. Briefly the procedure involves skin parking, a preauricular incision, in natural skin lines, a zig zag type of incision in the scalp and no incision on the neck and posterior scalp. The deeper layers of the skin are then tightened using a series of 2-3 purse string sutures, meanwhile lifting the SMAS layer and the skin along with it. An additional procedure is the neck liposuction that is done to take care of the bulge in the neck, and all the neck skin is redraped conveniently to provide a rejuvenated look.

The authors of the procedure perform a trichophytic closure, which means that they close the incision in such a way, that hair grows through the scar, thus virtually eliminating the visibility of the scar, adding to the cosmetic value of the procedure.

This excellent procedure of face lift is now being done in India at very low costs. The entire procedure may be done at about 3500 $ or 2500 Euro or so.

Full Face Lift Alternatives with Liquid Facelifts and MACS Lifts

Face lifts have come a long way since the original, unnaturally tight and stretched look of early procedures. MACS:

The other alternative procedures are known as a mid lift and MACS. This is executed similarly to a traditional procedure, but the incision area is smaller, and only the middle area of the face, from the corners of the eyes to the top of the mouth, is tightened. This often gives more natural results than the traditional procedure and focuses on removing the deep creases that develop around the nose. The surgery only takes an hour and the recovery time is normally fairly short.

MACS is meant for people with mild loss of skin elasticity, generally in the mid face area. It works similarly to the traditional, except the extent of incisions and lift is far less severe, which means less scarring and less complications.

During the procedure the incision is made near the hairline and ear. Then the loose skin is pulled back and secured with permanent suspension sutures. This tightens the cheek and area around the nose and mouth, eliminating the deep creases that often develop there. It also improves the contour of the neck and jaw area.

The benefit of a MACS procedure compared to the traditional is that the recovery period is usually significantly less. Patients can be back on their feet in as little as two weeks, while traditional facelifts can take up to six weeks for full recovery.

With all of the new advancements in cosmetic surgery, it is wise to research the different methods available and the success rates of new procedures.
